Cataract Surgery

Cataracts occur naturally as our eyes age and are found in a large part of the American population. They slowly cloud the eye’s lens, leading to blurry vision, difficulty with glare, and poor night vision. A common treatment for cataracts is surgery, which may reduce the need for glasses. 

Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure in which the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). At First Eye Associates, we use different types of technology based on our patients’ needs.

IOL Master

The IOL Master provides multiple measurements of your eye, including its length, corneal curvature, and other key dimensions. It also uses these measurements to calculate the appropriate power of the intraocular lens to be implanted.

This technology creates a map of the cornea’s curvature. Atlas Topography provides detailed images that aid in planning cataract surgery and help select and position the artificial intraocular lens.

After cataract surgery, some patients may develop posterior capsule opacification, sometimes called a secondary cataract. The YAG laser creates a small, precise opening in the cloudy capsule bag behind the lens, allowing light to reach the retina and improving clarity of vision. This quick, noninvasive procedure is performed in-office and usually does not require recovery time.

Our clinic uses a modern SLT/YAG combination laser, which also allows us to perform SLT treatments for glaucoma when needed.
