The Importance of Eye Drops

If you’ve been prescribed eye drops, it’s crucial that you use them, even if you think they aren’t working. Many symptoms of eye disease cannot be seen or felt. By using your eye drops, you’re preventing symptoms from worsening.

For example, eye drops are often used to treat glaucoma. These drops must be used daily to lower eye pressure and prevent damage to the optic nerve.

Common Eye Diseases

Our eyes impact our lives significantly. They allow our children to participate in activities and enable us to complete our daily tasks. However, as we get older, our vision changes. Comprehensive eye exams are important because they allow us to maintain our independence as we age.

During a comprehensive eye exam, our doctors screen for eye diseases. Cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and macular degeneration are the most common eye diseases affecting many Americans.

Cataracts

Cataracts cloud the lens of the eye, causing blurry vision. They become more common as we age. A common treatment for cataracts is cataract surgery.

Dr. Drake offers different lens options such as monofocal, toric, and multifocal lenses.  The health of your eyes and the measurements that are performed in the office will help determine what lens options will be best for you.  

Dr. Drake uses a monofocal plus lens made by Rayner called the RayOne EMV lens that is covered by insurance and it does give a small amount of near vision.

Some of the lenses she uses that are not covered by insurance are Toric lenses which correct astigmatism and Multifocal/Extended Depth Of Focus lenses which can make you glasses independent for most of your day to day activities but you may still use OTC readers for very fine print.

Glaucoma is a disease that affects the optic nerve. If left untreated, it can result in permanent vision loss.  There are several treatment options for glaucoma which can include eye drops, lasers or surgical options. 

Dr. Drake  performs SLT (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty) in office using a specialized laser to treat open-angle glaucoma. This laser is used to help lower eye pressure by allowing fluid to drain properly from the front inside part of the eye. Dr. Drake also uses Durysta in combination with SLT or alone which is a dissolvable implant that is inserted into the front part of the eye slowly releasing glaucoma medication over time. Dr. Drake also performs MIGS surgery in combination with cataract surgery with iStent which helps fluid drain from the eye and can often reduce or eliminate the use of glaucoma drops.  

High blood sugar levels may cause swelling and bleeding in the back of the eye, leading to vision loss. Treatments include medication, laser therapy, or surgery.

Macular degeneration blurs a person’s center of vision. Straight lines may appear wavy.  Treatments include dietary supplements, injections, or laser therapy.
